SPEECH by Prof. JOHAN GALTUNG & TRULS ØRA (historian)

(Wednesday 13th august 2014)

The historian Truls Øhra will present the historical mix of culture, religion and entrepreneurship that laid the ground for the events in Moss - and Norway in 1814. His thorough research has uncovered many intriguing details connected to happenings in and around Moss. Mr. Øhra's focus is to find how we can capture what really happened - to see how we can learn from history and bring the best of the ideas to life in the cultural and geographical settings we as individuals are part of today. Professor Johan Galtung will follow up with placing Norway's "1814" in an international setting. Napoleon - England - Russia; where Denmark/ Norway took on Napoleon, while Sweden went for Russia. How the happenings in 1812 paved the way for 1814, and the "Miracle at Eidsvold" as domestic politics geniality and foreign policy shut out. Johan Galtung will also elaborate on the importance of the "Moss Peace Treaty" - how could it come about, and what is in it for us today?
